ROCHESTER - Eleni Markou scored three first-half goals to lead the MCC women's soccer team to a 5-0 victory over Sussex County Community College in the NJCAA District E semifinals Saturday.
The Tribunes advance to the title game at 12 p.m. Sunday. A win there would clinch a trip to the NJCAA Division I national tournament.
Markou struck early to give Monroe a lead they would not relinquish. The freshman forward directed a perfect feed from Elin Eklund past the Skylander keeper for a 1-0 lead in the third minute.
MCC then scored a pair of goals in a span of 37 seconds to take control. Gabriella Hallnan notched the first one off an Eklund pass, and Markou followed with a header of a Hallnan cross to make it 3-0.
Marla Roberts added a score in the 22nd minute, with Markou assisting. Markou then finished off the scoring for the half - and the game - with a goal in the 36th minute off a pass from Hallnan.
Caitie Broderick and Kirsten Lane made one save apiece to combine for the shutout for the Tribunes. MCC outshot Sussex 27-4 and held a 13-1 edge in corner kicks.
