ROCHESTER - When the final horn sounded, the MCC ice hockey team poured onto the ice and gathered around their goalie. The Tribunes had finished their last home game the way they had so many others - with a victory.
Backed by some historic performances, Monroe defeated Mercyhurst University Club 13-1 Wednesday evening in the team's final contest on its home ice. The college announced earlier in the season that this would be the last season of MCC hockey.
The win also served as a warm-up for the real test that awaits this weekend - the NJCAA national tournament in Troy, NY.
Powered by seven third-period goals, the Tribunes moved to 21-1-1 heading to nationals. Dominik Gabaj continued his assault on the record books, totaling eight points on five goals and three assists. The eight points ties the single-game high he already had shared with two others, while the five goals were one off the all-time mark.
One all-time record that did fall Wednesday was for most goals in a season, as Martin Matejcek notched his 39th to break the tie he held with Aaron Hildreth from the 2009-2010 season. Matejcek also dished out five assists on the evening.
Jesse Little was stout in goal, making 16 saves on the Lakers. The majority of the action, however, was on the other end of the ice, as MCC peppered Mercyhurst with 42 shots on goal.
Tyler Underhill added a hat trick to go along with an assist, and Pavel Kuzmin had a goal and two assists for the Tribunes. Seth Hamilton, John Papas, and Tom Hanna also lit the lamp for Monroe.
MCC will play host Hudson Valley CC at 3 p.m. Saturday in the national semifinal. Should the Tribunes advance, Sunday's title game is slated for a 2 p.m. start.
