LINCOLN, Rhode Island - Erin Eklund scored less than four minutes into overtime to cap a furious comeback as the MCC women's soccer team edged Community College of Rhode Island 4-3 on Saturday.
Eklund took a feed from Tenysha Taylor, and from about 20 yards out, ripped a shot into the upper 90 for the victory. The goal capped a back-and-forth affair that saw the Tribunes take an early 1-0 advantage before the Knights responded with three straight to take a two-goal lead into the break.
Bayley Kralik scored the game's first goal in the 16th minute, converting a pass from Eklund to put Monroe out in front. CCRI bounced back with three straight, all off the foot of Mercedes Faust , to take a 3-1 lead into the intermission.
The Tribunes (4-3-2) put consistent pressure on the CCRI keeper, and the Tribunes broke through in the 55th minute as Eleni Markou cashed in on a penalty kick to cut the lead to 3-2.
Markou then came through with the equalizer in the 66th minute, scoring off a pass from Bianey Serrano to knot it at 3 and set up the game-winning OT goal from Eklund.
Monroe dominated in total shots, taking 39 compared to five for the Knights. Caitie Broderick finished with three saves in goal for the Tribunes.
