#20 Tribunes Fall to DMACC at Nationals, Set Sights on Schoolcraft in Consolation Play
HICKORY, N.C. – The Monroe Community College women's basketball team closed out a strong 2025-26 campaign on Monday morning, competing with resilience in a 62-47 contest against Des Moines Area Community College at the Tarlton Complex.
Facing an early deficit after the opening quarter, the Tribunes (23-7) responded with determination, settling in defensively and showing improved execution over the final three periods. Monroe played even with DMACC in the fourth quarter and continued to battle throughout, highlighted by a strong third-quarter effort.
Sophomore Zakieya Williams led the way with 15 points and an impressive five steals, impacting the game on both ends of the floor. Jae'La Gonzalez added nine points and three blocks, anchoring the Tribunes defensively, while Taryn Goodness contributed eight points and five rebounds.
The Monroe bench provided a key lift, led by Melice Gaye, who scored eight points on an efficient 4-of-6 shooting performance.
The Tribunes showed toughness on the glass, pulling down 41 rebounds, and remained aggressive defensively with 11 blocks and eight steals. Their effort in the paint resulted in 22 points inside, and they continued to fight through adversity against a deep DMACC squad.
Des Moines was led by Whitney Jensen's 19 points, but Monroe's defensive activity and second-half adjustments kept the game competitive.
Monroe CC will continue its national tournament run in the consolation bracket, returning to action on Wednesday at 2 p.m. against Schoolcraft College. The Tribunes will look to build on Monday's effort and close out their season on a high note as they take the floor once again at the Tarlton Complex.
