MCC hockey earns top seed at national tournament
The Tribunes are in search of their second national title.
ROCHESTER - The Monroe Community College hockey team has earned the top seed in the upcoming NJCAA national ice hockey tournament, hosted by Hudson Valley Community College.
The tournament is Saturday and Sunday, Feb. 22 and 23, in Troy, NY. The Tribunes (18-1-1) will open up against the host Vikings at 3 p.m. in the first semifinal on Saturday. The other will pit second-seeded Williston State College and No. 3 Erie Community College.
Sunday's championship is at 2 p.m.
Williston State is the defending national champ, having knocked off Monroe 3-2 in last year's title game. The Tetons qualified for the tournament by defeating Dakota College at Bottineau, two games to none, in the best-of-three series for the Region 13 title.
MCC earned a spot in the tournament by way of a perfect 10-0 record against Region III opponents. Erie and Hudson Valley earned at-large bids.
The 2013-14 season will be the last for the MCC hockey program. The college announced the discontinuation of the sport last November.
