Melanie Murphy, Jimmy Gutowski honored by WNYAC
The student-athletes are named 2012-13 WNYAC Special Award winners.
BUFFALO - MCC student-athletes Melanie Murphy and Jimmy Gutowski were honored as 2012-2013 Special Awards winners by the Western New York Athletic Conference.
Murphy was named Co-Freshman Female Athlete of the Year. Gutowski was named Academic Male Athlete of the Year.
Murphy had an outstanding season as she helped lead the MCC women’s lacrosse team to an 18-0 record and the program’s third NJCAA national title. Murphy led the Tribunes with 78 points on 41 goals and 37 assists and was named second team All-Region III. She saved some of her best play for the postseason. She registered eight goals and five assists at the national tournament, including four goals in the 17-5 win over Anne Arundel CC in the title game, and was named the tournament’s Most Outstanding Offensive Player.
Gutowski finished his two years at Monroe Community College with an astounding 84 hours earned at a 3.892 grade point average. The recipient of the NJCAA Award for Superior Academic Achievement, he was also named a winner of the SUNY Chancellor’s Award for Student Excellence. A captain on the baseball team, Gutowski finished the 2013 season with a 5-2 record, three complete games, and a 4.47 earned run average, and was a second team All-Region selection.
