MCC captures first WNYAC championship
The MCC volleyball team got a good start on what it hopes is a successful postseason, capturing the program's first WNYAC Tournament championship Saturday at Genesee Community College.
BATAVIA, NY – The MCC volleyball team got a good start on what it hopes is a successful postseason, capturing the program's first WNYAC Tournament championship Saturday at Genesee Community College.
The Tribunes defeated Erie CC 25-23, 25-17, 25-13 in the semifinals before dispatching Niagara County CC in four games in the title match. Scores were 25-17, 21-25, 25-15, 25-18.
Monroe is 37-3 on the season. The Trbiunes now look forward to next weekend's Region III tournament at Niagara. Winner of that tournament advances to the NJCAA Division III nationals in Rochester, Minn.
Paige Calabrese (Liverpool, NY/Liverpool) was named tournament MVP for the Tribunes. The sophomore libero finished the day with 44 digs.
Erica Thompson (Liverpool, NY/Cicero-North Syracuse) added 19 kills and 14 blocks, and Denae Rinaldo (Canastota, NY/Canastota) tallied 17 kills and 31 digs.
