ROCHESTER - In the past two weeks, Roosa Ariyo has set new MCC marks for both goals in a game, and in a career. You can now add single-season tallies to the list.
The sophomore forward scored four times on Saturday to pace the MCC women's soccer team to an 11-1 win over the William Smith College JVs on DiMarco Field. In the process, she became the team's all-time leader for goals in a season. Ariyo broke a tie she held with Wendy (Kotwas) Waddell, and her season total now rests at 39.
The potent Monroe attack again scored at will and hit double figures for the fourth consecutive game. MCC has 59 goals during its five-game winning streak.
The Herons actually struck first, as Clare O'Connor corralled a loose ball and gave William Smith the lead just 1:53 into the contest. Monroe then got the equalizer as Thenia Zervas scored an unassisted goal in the sixth minute.
Ariyo came through with her record-breaking goal in the 10th minute, fittingly off a pass from Zervas. Paige McGrath and Katrina Yencer followed with scores, and Ariyo ripped off three in a row to give MCC a 7-1 lead at the break.
Zervas added two second-half goals, while McGrath and Efi Brame also scored to provide the final margin.
Meryl Wakefield made three saves to earn the win in goal for the Tribunes.
