Lady Tribunes cruise in tournament opener
MCC routs Lake County 7-0.
MELBOURNE, Florida – The MCC women's soccer team opened the NJCAA Division I national tournament with a convincing 7-0 victory over the College of Lake County Tuesday afternoon.
The Tribunes (18-1-0) will take on Iowa Western at 2 p.m. Wednesday in their final pool play match. The winner will advance to the semifinals on Friday.
Natalie Rogers (Webster, NY/Webster Thomas) got Monroe going early, registering a goal just 25 seconds into the match. Jori Semrau (Greece, NY/Greece Arcadia) made it 2-0 in the 10th minute, converting a corner kick from Ally Sharpe (Brockport, NY/Brockport).
The advantage grew to three late in the half on an own goal by Lake County.
Jessica Riggall (Tully, NY/Tully) made it 4-0 early in the second half as the Tribunes continued to dictate the pace. Rogers then added her second goal in the 62nd minute, and Kaylen O'Brien (Spencerport, NY/Spencerport) found the back of the net a minute and a half later to make it 6-0.
Taylor Wingerden (Macedon, NY/Palmyra-Macedon) finished the scoring with just under 10 minutes remaining.
Chloe Crook (London, England/Holy Family) and Paige Buchholz (Greece, NY/Greece Odyssey) combined for the shutout.
