Tribunes stamp trip to nationals
Taylor Wingerden scores three times as MCC shuts out CCRI.
ROCHESTER – Taylor Wingerden (Macedon, NY/Palmyra-Macedon) sparked the attack with a hat trick as the MCC women's soccer team defeated Community College of Rhode Island 5-0 to win the NJCAA District E championship Sunday.
Monroe (17-1) now advances to the Division I national tournament, to be held Nov. 12-17 in Melbourne, Fla. MCC has won eight national titles in its history.
Wingerden scored in the 40th minute off a pass from Emily Szymonek (Greece, NY/Greece Olympia) to give the Tribunes a 2-0 lead. She then added goals in the 52nd and 84th minutes to help Monroe pad its advantage.
Chloe Crook (London, England/Holy Family) earned the shutout in goal, making four saves along the way. MCC outshot CCRI 24-5 on the game.
Ally Sharpe (Brockport, NY/Brockport) opened the scoring in the 13th minute for the Tribunes, putting home a rebound off a shot from Kaylen O'Brien (Spencerport, NY/Spencerport).
Alexis Dalberth (Greece, NY/Greece Odyssey) tallied Monroe's other goal, scoring off a long direct kick in the 42nd minute to give the team a 3-0 lead at the break.
O'Brien and Ali Campbell (Marion, NY/Marion) assisted on Wingerden's final two goals.
