Big second quarter lifts Monroe past Niagara

ROCHESTER - MCC used a 29-12 second-quarter run to open up a close contest en route to a 78-62 victory over Niagara County Community College in a Region III women's basketball matchup Saturday afternoon.

The top-ranked Lady Tribunes (7-0 WNYAC, 17-1 overall) overcame a season-high 25 turnovers as well as 41 percent shooting from the field to notch their 15th straight victory.

Led by sophomores Jaynelle Robinson and Torrie Cash, Monroe used a huge second quarter to turn a one-point lead after the first into an 18-point advantage at the break. Robinson was 4-for-4 from the floor and scored 10 points while hauling down five rebounds in the frame. Cash knocked down a pair of 3's and scored eight.

MCC built the lead to 25 after three quarters and held on down the stretch against the Thunder Wolves. It was a sloppy game all around as Niagara committed 27 turnovers, which the Tribunes turned into 29 points.

Lanay Rodney led Monroe with 27 points and 10 rebounds. Robinson also had a double-double with 16 points and 12 boards, while Cash had 13 points, seven rebounds, four assists, and four steals.
