ROCHESTER - Monroe Community College allowed just one earned run on its way to a sweep of Jefferson Community College in a Region III softball doubleheader Tuesday afternoon.
The Tribunes moved to 6-0 in regional play and 11-7 overall with the 8-3 and 6-0 wins. Hannah Del Gatto went the distance in the opener, allowing three runs (one earned) and striking out six. Brittany Brown tossed a shutout in the nightcap, scattering five Cannoneer hits while striking out four.
Monroe broke the first game open with a five-run second inning. Elizabeth Penders worked a two-out walk to put runners at first and second, and Cassidy Geise followed with a base hit to score the game's first run.
Maria Marcera then plated two with a single up the middle. Jen Newell dropped down a bunt base hit and Del Gatto walked to load the bases. Camryn Bianchi capped the rally with a two-run hit to make it 5-0.
Jefferson responded with a single run in the third and two more in the fourth to cut the lead to two runs. But MCC tacked on three insurance runs in the fifth.
Bianchi led off with a walk and moved up on a single by Brooke Catlin. Camille Harrison followed with an RBI single to right field to make it 6-3. Geise later drove in two with a base hit just beyond the outstretched glove of the second baseman to provide the final margin.
Geise finished 2-for-3 with the three RBIs, and Harrison was 3-for-4. Marcera and Newell had two hits apiece.
A four-run third inning was all Monroe needed in Game 2 to support the pitching of Brown. Geise reached on an error to lead off the inning, moved to third on a groundout, and scored on a Marcera sacrifice fly to make it 1-0.
Newell then singled and stole second before scoring on a Del Gatto base hit. Catlin followed with a two-run single to right to cap the inning.
Marcera added an RBI single in the sixth and Harrison a run-scoring base hit in the seventh.
Catlin finished 3-for-4 in the nightcap. Del Gatto and Harrison had two hits apiece.
