Gillen's big day helps Monroe sweep Cayuga

ROCHESTER - Sophomore Amanda Gillen drove in eight runs to lead the MCC softball team to a Region III doubleheader sweep of visiting Cayuga CC Friday afternoon.

Gillen doubled, homered, and drove in four as the Tribunes (3-9) took the opener 13-8. She then went 3-for-4 with a double and four more RBIs in a 13-5 win in the nightcap. Monroe had lost six in a row before righting the ship against the Spartans.

Cayuga held a 4-1 lead in game one before the Tribunes rallied. Gillen's three-run homer in the fourth tied it up, and MCC took the lead later in the frame on a base hit by Emily DeFilippo.

Monroe then added five more in the bottom of the fifth. Tori Thuman had a sacrifice fly, Jenny Pearl drove in a run with a single, and Jen Maysuch punctuated the stanza with a long three-run home run to make it 10-4.

Cayuga tacked on two in the top of the sixth, but MCC responded with three in the bottom half. Maysuch again provided the big hit, knocking her second homer of the game after a run-scoring double by Gillen.

Bri Wagner went the distance and struck out six to get the win.

Monroe got off to a quick start in game two, as Gillen's two-run single highlighted a three-run frame. Cayuga scored two in the bottom half, but MCC got one back in the third and then five in the fourth to take a 9-2 lead.

Vicky Adkins had an RBI single in the fourth and an error brought another run in. Thuman plated another with a single, and Gillen's two-run base hit capped the inning.

The Spartans again rallied by scoring three in the fifth, but MCC put it away with four in the sixth. Taylor House produced a run-scoring single, and Nicole Flint plated two with a base hit before coming around on an error.

Larissa Brower tossed the complete game to get the victory.
