ROCHESTER - The MCC softball team rallied from an early 4-0 deficit to top Genesee Community College 5-4 in the first round of the Region III-A tournament Tuesday.

The fourth-seeded Tribunes (25-14) now advance to the regional final, where they will square off with top-seeded Herkimer College in a best-of-three series this Friday and Saturday at GCC. The winner will move on to the NJCAA Division III national tournament.

The Cougars scored once in the top of the first and then tacked on three more in the third to take a 4-0 lead.

The Tribunes got right back into the ballgame in the bottom half of the third. Bonnie Parrotta led off with a single and later moved to second on a base hit by Lexy Rouse. Tori Thuman then followed with a long three-run homer to left-center to bring Monroe within one.

MCC then took the lead in the fifth. Kayla Henning singled, moved to second on a groundout, and advanced to third on a fly ball to center.  Hannah Evingham then came through with a two-out single to tie the game at 4.

After a wild pitch, Amanda Gillen singled to move Evingham to third. Morgan Boyce followed with a single to center to give MCC a 5-4 lead.

Becky Knorr took it from there. The sophomore pitcher shut down the Cougars in the sixth and seventh to clinch the win. Knorr got the win with four scoreless innings of relief.
