ITHACA, NY - The MCC softball team punched a ticket to the NJCAA Division III national tournament by sweeping Mohawk Valley CC Friday to win the Region III-B title.
The Tribunes (24-15) prevailed 8-0 and 13-5 to capture the best-of-three tournament. Monroe will now travel to Rochester, Minn., May 16-18, to play for a national championship. MCC has won three such titles, in 2006, 2007, and 2008.
Herkimer County Community College claimed the Region III-A championship and also advances to the national tournament.
Joanna Bardak (Amherst, NY/Amherst) was named tournament MVP. The sophomore outfielder was 3-for-3 in game one, and 4-for-5 with four doubles and three RBIs in game two.
Allee Jurewicz (Lancaster, NY/Lancaster) homered in each game and totaled three hits and three RBIs in game two. She was named to the all-tournament team as well.
Alexis Haley (Rochester, NY/Aquinas) tossed the shutout in the opener, allowing just three hits along the way. Chrissy Rennard (Brockport, NY/Brockport) had two hits and drove in two in the opener.
Haley was also named to the all-tournament squad.
