ROCHESTER - The MCC softball team swept a doubleheader from Niagara County CC Saturday to win the best-of-three series in the first round of the Region III, Division III tournament.
Scores were 2-0 and 2-1.
The Tribunes (22-15) will take on either Broome or Mohawk Valley next weekend at Tompkins Cortland Community College in another best-of-three series. The winner moves on to the national tournament.
Broome and Mohawk spilt a pair Saturday and will play off Sunday to determine MCC's opponent.
Game two was locked at one into extra innings. Jenna Clarke (Brockport, NY/Brockport) led off the top of the eighth with a single. One out later, Allee Jurewicz (Lancaster, NY/Lancaster) singled to right-center. The ball eluded two Niagara defenders, allowing Clarke to come around with the go-ahead run.
Taylor Grieger (Henrietta, NY/Rush-Henrietta) then set down the side in the bottom half to finish off the win. Grieger went the distance, allowing one run on three hits while striking out six.
Monroe got its first run in the first inning, as Alexis Haley (Rochester, NY/Aquinas) scored on a base hit by Angela Sims (Geneva, NY/Geneva).
Brianna Bush (Penn Yan, NY/Penn Yan) tossed the complete game shutout in the opener. The freshman allowed five hits and struck out 10.
Joanna Bardak (Amherst, NY/Amherst) put MCC on the board with an RBI single in the fifth. The Tribunes tacked on an insurance run in the sixth.
Clarke finished 2-for-3 with a double, a triple, and a run scored.
