NORTH EAST, Pennsylvania - The MCC softball team lost two heartbreakers Wednesday afternoon, falling 1-0 in eight innings and 6-5 to host Mercyhurst North East.
The games were the first in over a month for Monroe (0-12), which is still searching for its first win. The Saints are now 23-5 and are ranked 14th in the NJCAA Division II national poll.
The Tribunes were no hit in game one, as Mercyhurst pitcher Ronette Claar tossed the complete game shutout and struck out an MNE record 18 batters. The Saints scored the winning run in the bottom of the eighth on a base hit by Tyler Honard.
Taylor Grieger (Henrietta, NY/Rush-Henrietta) and Aldyn Carlson (Dunkirk, NY/Dunkirk) pitched well in defeat for Monroe. Grieger went five innings and allowed four hits while striking out four. Carlson allowed an unearned run and struck out two over two frames.
The Tribunes took a 5-0 lead in game two, but the Saints scored four in the fourth, one in the sixth, and one in the seventh to walk off with the win. Claar provided the winning sacrifice fly.
Chrissy Rennard (Brockport, NY/Brockport) finished 3-for-4 with a double, a run scored, and an RBI for the Tribunes. Ryann Sullivan (Brockport, NY/Brockport) added a two-run single in MCC's four-run third inning. Angela Sims (Geneva, NY/Geneva) added a double and an RBI.
