Tribs win opener at nationals
MCC shuts out Oakton 3-0.
ALBANY, Georgia – The MCC men's soccer team got off to a great start at the NJCAA Division I national tournament, defeating Oakton CC 3-0 Monday afternoon at Darton College.
The Tribunes (17-0-1) will take on Illinois Central College at 5 p.m. Wednesday in their final pool play game. A win would move the team into the semifinals on Friday.
The tournament format is similar to the World Cup, with four pools containing three teams each. The top team from each pool advances to the semifinals.
Seamus Sharkey (Newtown, Ireland/St. Eunans) scored the eventual game-winner early in the first half for the Tribunes, who controlled the tempo for much of the contest.
Ngwese Ebangwese (Pittsford, NY/Pittsford Sutherland) scored to make it 2-0 with 7:30 left in the opening half. The sophomore forward also finished the scoring, tallying his second goal in the 82nd minute.
Fernando Meza (Miami, FL/Miami Beach) made seven saves for the shutout for Monroe.
