MCC falls in national semifinals
The Tribunes finish in third place at the NJCAA Division I national tournament.
ALBANY, Georgia – The MCC men's soccer team ran into the eye of a storm in the semifinals of the NJCAA Division I national tournament semifinals.
The Louisburg College Hurricanes scored two goals in the first half and three more unanswered to begin the second and went on to a 5-1 victory over the Tribunes Friday evening.
MCC, which was in its first national tournament since 1985, finishes one of its best seasons ever with a record of 18-1-1. Louisburg will take on Tyler Junior College for the national title Saturday afternoon.
The Hurricanes scored the game's first goal in the 16th minute. Louisburg added to the lead in the 32nd minute to enter the break with a two-goal lead.
Louisburg then tallied three straight in the second half for the insurmountable advantage.
Monroe's goal came later in the second half, as Seamus Sharkey (Newtown, Ireland/St. Eunans) scored off a pass from Gianluca Cuomo (Rochester, NY/Greece Athena).
Both Sharley and Cuomo were named to the All-Tournament team.
