Cupello wins 300th as Tribs capture regional title
MCC tops Bryant & Stratton 2-0 to move on to the district tournament.
ROCHESTER – MCC men's soccer coach Nelson Cupello picked up his 300th career victory in style Saturday afternoon on DiMarco Field.
The Tribunes continued their magical season with a 2-0 victory over Bryant & Stratton in the Region III, Division I championship game. It's the fourth straight regional title and 15th overall for MCC.
Monroe improves to a perfect 15-0 and now moves on to next weekend's Northeast District Tournament. Winner of that tournament will advance to the NJCAA Division I nationals.
MCC got on the board in the 13th minute, as Mohamed Wally (Jersey City, NJ/Ferris) converted a pass from Steve Service (Irondequoit, NY/Eastridge) for a 1-0 lead.
The Tribunes struck again less than four minutes later. This time it was Wally setting up Seamus Sharkey (Newtown, Ireland/St. Eunans), who converted for the two-goal advantage.
That was all the cushion MCC would need. Solid goalkeeping from Fernando Meza (Miami, FL/Miami Beach), who had four saves, and terrific defense from Sharkey, Service, Shane McInerney (Ballinosloe, Ireland/Athlone), and Scott Cowan (Rye, NY/St. Margaret's) kept the Bobcats off the board.
