ROCHESTER - A key 7-0 run spanning the first and second quarters broke open a tight game and led the MCC men's lacrosse team to a 22-9 victory over Tompkins Cortland CC for Monroe's first win of the season.
Mitchell Summers and Anthony Kimber had two goals each during the run as the Tribunes (1-2) turned a 3-all tie into a 10-3 lead early in the second quarter. Monroe carried a 14-5 lead into the break and built the advantage to 20-7 after three quarters.
After scoring just 16 goals combined in a pair of losses to highly-ranked opponents on the road, MCC was glad to return to the friendly but chilly confines of DiMarco Field. The Tribunes took command during that run and maintained momentum the rest of the contest. Monroe held a 58-33 edge in total shots, won 21-of-33 faceoffs, and scored on five of 10 man-up opportunities.
Brett Cunningham had a huge day for MCC, finishing with five goals and four assists. Summers tallied four goals and three assists, while Kimber also found the back of the cage four times. Reed Perestam had three goals, and Cruz Mayberry chipped in with two goals and three assists.
