SYRACUSE - The MCC men's lacrosse team put up an outstanding effort, but the season came to an end in a 16-11 loss to defending national champion Genesee in the Region 3B championship on Saturday.
The Tribunes (9-5) led 5-3 after the first quarter and carried a 7-6 advantage into the half. The Cougars responded with a 7-0 run that spanned the third quarter and the first six minutes of the fourth to take command.
Monroe gamely held on, cutting the lead to 15-11 with three straight goals late in the fourth, but simply ran out of time in the end.
Mark Campbell finished with 16 saves. He, along with Jobson, were named to the all-tournament team.
Jobson and Weil scored early to stake Monroe to a 2-0 lead. After the Cougars responded with two of their own, Weil and Lehman converted to make it 4-2.
Genesee cut it back to one, but Kallio found the back of the cage just before the quarter ended to put Monroe up 5-3.
Jobson then added a pair of scores in the second quarter as Monroe led 7-6 at the break.
The Cougars then outscored the Tribunes 4-0 in the third quarter and added the first three goals of the fourth to gather momentum.
