ROCHESTER - Top-ranked Onondaga Community College ended Monroe's six-game winning streak on Saturday, pulling away for a 21-7 victory over the eighth-ranked Tribunes in a Region III men's lacrosse battle on DiMarco Field.
The Lazers (11-0) led just 2-1 after a well-played first quarter before outscoring MCC 9-2 in the second quarter to take command. The Tribunes gamely held on and scored three times in the third quarter, but OCC held off any late charge to stay unbeaten.
James Sexton got Onondaga on the baord just over a minute into the game for a 1-0 lead. The score remained that way until late in the first quarter, when MCC's David Lehman scored off an Austin Jobson feed to tie it at 1 with 1:32 left.
Sexton then scored his second just 16 seconds later to give OCC a 2-1 lead heading to the second.
That's where the Lazers took over. Onondaga scored seven straight to start the second stanza. Jobson and Patrick Brewer tacked on goals for the Tribunes late in the half, but OCC took an 11-3 lead into the locker room.
Onondaga had the answer, however, and was able to pull away.
Weil finished with three goals and one assist and Jobson tallied two goals and two assists. Lehman and Brewer had one goal apiece.
Mark Campbell had a busy afternoon in the cage for Monroe, stopping 19 Lazer shots. OCC took a total of 60 shots on the game.
The Lazers had a 49-33 edge in ground balls and won 23 out of 31 faceoffs.
