Huge comeback helps MCC take regional title
The Tribunes erase a 14-stroke deficit, qualify for nationals.
ONEIDA, NY - The MCC golf team found itself in an unusual position after Monday's opening round of the 2013 Region III tournament. A rough day and a team score of 329 had the Tribunes a distant second place, 14 strokes behind clubhouse leader Jamestown CC.
Fast forward eighteen holes, and all seemed right yet again.
Monroe fashioned a monumental comeback during Tuesday's final round, firing a team score of 306 to vault past Jamestown and claim the program's fifth consecutive regional title. MCC finished with a two-day total of 635, nine strokes better than the Jayhawks and 33 better than third-place Onondaga.
Brandon Grzywacz (Holley, NY/Holley) led the way for the Tribunes, finishing tied for second overall with a two-day total of 153 (77-76). Brett Robertson (Liverpool, NY/Liverpool) tied for fifth at 156 after rounds of 79 and 77.
Jefferson CC's Chadd Call earned individual medalist honors with a total of 148 (73-75).
Zach Tuttle (Penfield, NY/Penfield) followed an opening-round 86 with a 75 on Tuesday to finish eighth at 161 for Monroe. Jered Maloney (Honeoye, NY/Honeoye) had rounds of 87 and 78, and Tyler Hill (Brockport, NY/Brockport) shot rounds of 87 and 79.
The Tribunes now advance to the NJCAA Division III national tournament, which will be played June 4-7 at Chautauqua Golf Course in Chautauqua, NY. Monroe has won four national titles, including three straight from 2009-2011.
