MCC Men's Basketball

ROCHESTER - The MCC men's basketball team built a lead as large as 16 and held on down the stretch to defeat Cecil College 86-80 in the opener of the sixth annual Murph Shapiro Classic Saturday evening.

Majesty Brandon led the way with 24 points and Wes Nelson Jr. flirted with a triple-double for the Tribunes (3-1), who will take on Mohawk Valley on Sunday. MCC will be looking to avenge a loss to the Hawks last weekend.

Brandon had 15 as Monroe took shot 58 percent from the field and took a 46-37 lead into the locker room. MCC led 68-52 after a Keith King dunk with 9:48 remaining.

The Seahawks chipped away and stayed within single digits, but Monroe was able to put it away.

King finished with 16 points and Rodney Johnson II added 11. Taylor Clements chipped in with 10 points and seven rebounds, while Nelson tallied nine points, 12 assists, and eight boards.
